What is an infrared camera? How do they work?

Infrared cameras are hardware devices specifically designed for capturing images with infrared light radiation. The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into several parts according to the wavelength light value, as shown in the following figure.

Our eyes are able to capture only the light that is in the visible spectrum fragment. Conventional commercial cameras are usually designed to capture images with this type of light or radiation, just as the human eye does.

However, infrared cameras are sensitive to the infrared spectrum, and that is why they are so special for us.

There are two types of infrared cameras:

• Infrared or Night Vision Cameras:

Sensitive to Near-Infrared and Short-Wave Infrared light are commonly used for night video security surveillance, hunting, and army operations.

You can see the difference between a Near-Infrared and a common RGB image in the following picture:

• Thermal Cameras:

Sensitive to Mid and Long-Wave Infrared radiation are used for fire detection, industry inspections, security, army operations…and currently in body temperature measurement in access control due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These cameras are expensive and more complex than the former.

Infrared cameras apps for smartphones

We are working to provide the best solution for smartphone devices.

Currently, just a few mobile devices have Near-Infrared (NIR) Cameras integrated (only for facial recognition unlocking), and even fewer devices include thermal cameras. In fact, the Cat® S60 and Cat® S61 series are the only known smartphones that have integrated this type of camera (designed by the well-known company FLIR®).
